How to start [Configure] BSNL Broadband connection on Ubuntu Linux.

ADS BY GOOGLE

Just few days ago, i installed UBUNTU 8.04 LTS on my laptop, as i am user of BSNL Broadband, i connected BSNL Broadband [Dataone] to my laptop for surfing the net, but i think few people face few problems while connecting to BSNL Broadband [Dataone] in Ubuntu Linux. so i am providing a quick guide or tutorial for new users to start there BSNL Boradband on Ubuntu Linux.
[Note: This guide is for LAN connection only, and not for the USB connections as many modem manufacturer doesnt provide drivers for Linux versions.]

Step 1:

Go to your Network control panel.
Follow steps : Taskbar >> System >> Administration >> Network.

Step 2:

Now you will see some thing like this

Network settings

Network settings

Then click on the Unlock button and then it will ask for Administrative password, Enter your Password. and click Authenticate so that it will unlock the locked features.

Step 3:

Click on Wired connection and then its properties, it will show you “Connection setting tab” select “Automatic configuration (DHCP)” from the list and click OK.

Step 4:

Select Point to Point connection, and go to its properties. It will pop up the pppo properties.
Check the “Enable this connection”, and select “PPPoE connection type” and Enter the account data (Username and Password)in specified boxes,

Step 5:

Go to Modem tab from same Window, select the Ethernet interface (Generally the eth0)
Go to option tab select all check boxes. and then OK. and close.

Now everytime you want to connect to net, just click on LAN Icon on taskbar and go to Dial Up connections and click on Connect to pppOe via modem and get connectiviy.

So now just start your Firefox and start browsing the internet from your Ubuntu Linux.

My Laptop has a Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection.

ny ways i figured out the solution.
the default connection manager in ubuntu does not have much options for wireless connection .
so i used “WICD” wired & wireless network manager for Linux , its cool now i am connected .

    Hi,

I tried the 5 steps stated at the beginning of this thread but it has not worked for me. Diagnostic detail:

    * After the five steps, even after trying /etc/init.d/networking restart, I could not connect using ‘Connect to ppp0 via Modem’.
    * Using BSNL DataOne with Siemens C2110 modem
    * Using Ubuntu 8.04

I have the output of ifconfig, /var/log/messages, /etc/init.d/networking restart
Cannot find an option to attach file, so have not attached it here. If needed, I can email directly.

    Please advise.

    Thanks in advance,
    Prakash

My blunder: I was giving the wrong password and so, I was getting a ‘CHAP authentication failed’ message in /var/log/messages. Also, I had to enable roaming mode in my office wireless connection.

I dont think I found anything usefull anywhere regarding connecting ubuntu 9.10 to internet using PPPoE. Changing the mode to bridge did work without any problem. Details about this are mostly found in the CD which came with the modem.

I have one more way to configure BSNL Broadband which is easy to configure n will finish configuration in less than 2 mins. Also you don’t have to start your network services.

I haven’t tried on Feroda core based linux.

If you are using Ubuntu 8.04 or later then type ‘ppoeconf’ in your terminal.
** pppoecong = Point To Point Over Ethernet CONFiguration
Peer To Peer Over Ethernet CONFiguration

The program will automatically detect your interfaces (in my case 2 interfaces for single router. I connect my router through LAN and USB both at a time). Answer some questions i.e. few clicks on yes, then you have to enter your username, to the next step your password. Again 2 clicks on yes. Now it will ask you question about your connection like
    1. To activate connection on every system startup.
    2. Do you want to activate connect right now

My suggestion will be, answer them “no”. On last screen it will show you the commands to activate and deactivate the connection. use them.

If you want make bash/shell file to start and stop the connection
    here are the instructions

    Make two files

**In file codes, there’s no problem if you replace “bash”by “shell”. It will still act the same.

    codes are here:
    filename : BSNL start.sh

    !#/bin/bash
    pon dsl-provider

    filename :BSNL stop.sh

    !#/bin/bash
    poff -a

after making these files, to make them executable enter this commands

    chmod +x BSNL start.sh
    chmod +x BSNl stop.sh

By mistake if you entered wrong information and wizard has done its work, don’t worry. again type ‘pppoeconf’ in your terminal

Hope this will help you all…
