BSNL broadband is still the most popular and widely used broadband service in India. BSNL brought the low cost and high speed broadband service in India (Though we are still far slower than other developed countries). Many people use BSNL‘s fixed traffic plans, we need to keep eyes on our usages in these plans. (Though I am on unlimited plan, I use (love) to track how many GBs I have downloaded till now.)

There are many ways to check the usages. Here I am giving a list of good software, sites, and services to check how much internet you have used.

1. SMS Alert:
This is the official service, which sends SMS and E-Mail alerts for usages.
You can register yourself for the service at http://bbusage.bsnl.in/

2. DataFox – Firefox and Chrome Browser Plug-in.
DataFox is nice Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome plug-in which shows the BrandBand usages in browser itself. Its very nice and handy utility. No need to check any special software or no need to visit any URL for checking the usages. Just give the login credentials to plug-in and the plug-in will automatically fetch and display the usages in browser status bar.

HOW TO increase speed of BSNL broadband UL750 plan.

BSNL – India’s number one Telecommunications Company. I am using UL750 plan of BSNL. UL750 means Unlimited plan with monthly rental of 750INR (taxes extra). It provides speed of 256kbps, which is good for normal surfing and small downloads.

I received many e-mails through the contact page about how to increase the speed of this UL750 plan. Even on Orkut many people ask me how to speed up the connection of BSNL.

Today i am not going to tell you any secret or something different here.I will give you few details about how BSNL or any ISP (Internet service provider) calculate the speed of there connections.

According to plan specifications of 750 UL plan, it is provided that the plan will provide bandwidth of 256kbps (note the small kbps).Means you will get the speed around 32KBps (now note the capital KBps).

If you are aware of storage conventions and about the TB,GB,KB,kb etc. Then you must ware of the table below.

Data conversion table :
Bite: 8 bits = 1 byte
Bytes: 1024 bytes = 1 KB
Kilobytes: 1024 KB = 1 MB
Megabytes: 1024 MB = 1 GB…….

The Fact :

So as BSNL is providing speed of 256kbps which is equivalent to 32KBps !! So if you are getting speed around 30-32KBps while downloading then you are getting best for what you are paying. If you want any such conversions in broadband plans just divide the number by eight. i.e. 256/8 = 32.

But still

Speed is less than 30-32KBps ?? then read on ..

Is your telephone line is ok ?? Check for any joints and if possible replace the wire with new single wire. Avoid joints.
If your surfing speed is slow then try using Firefox web browser instead of Internet explorer and use OpenDNS.

Choosing healthy torrent file is always important to get maximum speed in your torrent client. But how to choose the best torrent site ? according to my personal experience i listed few points here that we should keep in mind before choosing the correct torrent file before adding it to the torrent client.

Seeders

Even if you have highly tweaked uTorrent client but speed depends on the uploads that the torrent is getting at other end. Always check for higher number of seeders before downloading the torrent. Seeders means number of people or clients feeding your torrent for your download.

Seeders : Leechers [The Ratio]

If uploaders i.e. seeders are less than the downloaders i.e. leechers then how could you get the best speed ? so choose the torrent with proper ratio. Select atleast 1:1 ratio if possible.

The website

Even if you downloaded the best torrent file, if it is not giving speed then there may be problem is site which provides it. Searching for high seeder torrent is not easy but the information about number of seeders must be correct and recent so that the file will give best of its speed. Thats why choosing the best torrent site is important. I listed few best torrent sites check them out.

Even after you tweaked your uTorrent for higher speed if your torrent is not good then how you can get the maximum speed ? Choosing the best torrent site plays important role to get the maximum speed in your uTorrent client. I am using torrent sites from 4Years this is my personal list of torrent sites on which you can rely for quality torrents and high speed downloads.

Here is my list,
1.Mininova
> Mininova.org is one of the best and trusted site i ever used. The number of seeders and leechers plays important role in download speed. Mininova provides excellent and almost realtime statistics. You can update the statistics yourself [need registration for requesting update] Though for downloading the torrent on Mininova is Free and doesnt need any type of registration or invite code.

2.Demonoid
> Demonoid is (in)famous for its quality downloads. Demonoid was closed after some legal complaints placed against site but now it is running well. Demonoid requires registration and need Invite code for it. but the quality of statistics is excellent and realtime. Demonoid is at second position in my list.

3.The Pirate Bay
> The Pirate Bay is also good site for torrent download, but due to its unwanted adult ads it is not suitable for home use. Though this site also provides good information with torrents.

These three will satisfy your hunger of downloading, but there are many many sites for this purpose. but above listed sites are the best amongst them [according to me]

uTorrent is the best and most used P2P client. Now a days most of Pirated movies and softwares are coming first on torrent sites than those made Rapidshare or other direct download sites. Rapidshare many times block many ISP including India’s BSNL. Here according to my personal experience i am sharing few 100% working tricks to increase the download speed of uTorrent.

Choosing the Torrent file

Before tweaking your uTorrent, you must choose the best and healthy torrent file for your speedy downloads. Read my post about Choosing the torrent file for high speed download in any torrent client.

Choosing the correct site for downloading the Torrents

Trackers play much important in speed of your torrent download, so you must choose the torrent download sites perfectly. You can read my list of best torrent sites.

Port forwarding

To achieve the top speed in uTorrent your port must be forwarded. The forwarded port in uTorrent then the status bar in uTorrent will show Green icon. Else it will be exclamation mark.
If it is forwarded then it is fine, else you need to change the port number to get the correct port.Choose a port number greater than 10,000 . Currently i am using port number “43081″ and it is forwarded. Choose any number and check if it is forwarded or not. You can change the port number through clicking on that icon or by pressing “CTRL+G”.

Save your port

Once you got the perfect port number, make sure your option in Option >> Preference >> Connection >> “Randomize port each start” is unchecked.

Tell windows, uTorrent is working for me

Windows firewall may try to block the uTorrent connection with the network, thats why make sure your option in Option >> Preference >> Connection >> “Add windows firewall exception” is checked.

Dont tell your ISP that you are using uTorrent

Many ISP’s block uTorrent downloads, that’s why make sure your option in Option >> Preference >> BitTorrent >> Protocol Encryption is Enabled. This will surely increase your speed.

Hey Firewall, let the flow come in

If you are using any firewall software, add uTorrent in “allowed application” or “allowed programs” so that they will allow uTorrent to work to get maximum speed.

Upload : Download – Ratio

I suggest keep changing the ratio as per speed, i try to keep this ratio at 0.5 i.e. if my download speed us 100KB/ps then i will keep my upload speed near to 50KB/ps. keep changing this speed. NEVER make upload speed to ZERO. Many torrent trackers ban the IPs who do not upload so keep this option atleast close to 50%.

There are many other options in uTorrent, i recommend you dont play with them. They will not affect your speed, but may cause lesser speed problem.
