India is 2nd on second position when it comes to orkut users.

Recently I learned ASP.Net, Its really nice technology for web application development. Google’s Orkut is ASP.Net application. But i just seen the webserver details of Orkut, they are running linux OS !!. I just shocked to see the working of ASP.Net on linux platform. So i did a bit research for it.

There exists one open source .Net development framework for Open source lovers, named MONO. Most probably Google is using Mono on their Linux servers to run the ASP.Net application.

According to Wikipedia,

Mono is a free and open source project led by Novell to create an Ecma standard compliant, .NET-compatible set of tools, including among others a C# compiler and a Common Language Runtime. Mono can be run on Linux, BSD, UNIX, Mac OS X, Solaris and Windows operating systems.

We can also use .htaccess file of linux servers to give any extension to serving pages to fool the users, this might be the case with orkut, but the WordPress developer Matt Mullenweg have seen many ASP.Net error pages on orkut in early days of orkut. (Ignore fatal error on Matt’s blog). so we can say that Google is orkut using ASP.Net for Orkut.

Google’s survey site i.e. survey.googleratings.com is using Microsoft IIS to serve the dynamic ASP.Net pages, so will Google use the ASP.Net technology in future for few more products ? It will be really interesting to see whats next.

After release of Ubuntu 8.10 now Canonical launched the latest and new version of Ubuntu Linux. The new version is 9.04 and have codename as “Jaunty Jackalope”. This new version of Ubuntu is released on 23rd of April 2009. Means just 4 days ago.

This new version is released after 1year of last release which was 8.04, this new released do not contain any special changes like the previous one. But this time they released a special version for Notebook users, called “Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix” which is specially tested on few branded know laptops.

I just cant understand one issue here at Ubuntu’s download page. Check this image

I was just shocked that Ubuntu is preferring the users to use the older version and its support is more than the newer version. !! I don’t know why, but its strange.Same case is with the server edition of Ubuntu, the older version 8.04 is support until 2013 and the newer 9.04 if support until 2010.

According to Matt Cutts – The Google engineer, the new ubuntu 9.04 boots in just 7.83 sec !! Now its time to check it on my system which is not as high powered as the Matt’s system.

But still as always Ubuntu is free to download and it really rocks with its amazing graphics and amazing features. I am still using Ubuntu in my laptop.

If you want Ubuntu on CD for free of cost go to ShipIt.Ubuntu.com and place a order for free CDs, The Ubuntu people will send you the latest version of Ubuntu for FREE !!. I ordered on CD for me. But now due to high number of requests they paused taking orders of free CD. So download ubuntu , burn it on CD and enjoy the power of open source.

Currently gaming fever is on me. Me and my friends group play Counter strike every evening on our Laptops. Just few weeks ago i installed Ubuntu on my laptop but for gaming , i uninstalled it and installed Windows XP.

But again after few days, the gaming fever came to ground, and i installed Knoppix linux on my Laptop. I have fad of using various Operating systems. I tried many Operating systems (After computer upgrade, almost any OS was running my system) like different Linux flavors, SUN Solaris, all most all windows versions [Including Longhorn, Home Server edition, etc] I was trying Knoppix first time. Its almost same as Ubuntu, and yes its free (But, No free CDs, Download it and burn it and use it)

Currently Linux is gaining popularity. Many people , many offices are switching them selves to Linux. I am planning to do some Linux certification for my future. As a computer science student, i personally think that Open source has a bright and wide future. There are thousands of Linux versions available to download and use. Most of them are free but few are paid.

Check out the list of various linux distribution.

I recommend you to use Linux operating system over other operating system, there are many reasons. But few of the most important are “Very less virus threat (negligible)”, “Free of cost”.
